Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequent questions and answers

How do you know which Martial Art is right for you?

A lot depends on what you want to achieve while training, so this can come down to personal choice.

Taekwondo is a physical activity, so it will help you improve fitness and tone your muscle shape. Sparring will give you an excellent workout, and as you progress from the basics, you will master the more advanced techniques which will enable you to strike with lethal precision in any situation you deem it necessary.

Development during training is a key part of Taekwondo and we build the foundations for discipline. Through training students learn more about themselves, and how to trust & respect others. Discipline is also a skill which enables students to quickly assess real-world situations and learn when to engage and avoid dangerous situations.

With any martial art you need to consider if you’ll really be able to confidently protect yourself and your family in any dangerous situation. Whilst many other martial arts are unproven in these types of situations, Taekwondo is used by the Korean army and special forces as their martial art of choice during close combat hand-to-hand fighting. It’s a proven effective martial art to both defend and attack with lethal speed and precision during real combat situations.

How do you know which is a good Martial Arts club?

This is an important question any beginner should ask themselves, however it’s not easy to work out if you’re new to martial arts. First of all do you research and find out about the organisation behind the club, we’re affiliated with the T.A.G.B (Taekwondo association of Great Britain) who provide training and certification for instructors. This means you will be taught by experienced and trained instructors who have the latest training techniques and sports science advancement information to help you achieve the most from every training session.

Secondly you should research the instructor, his experience and how much the students respect him. Evesham Taekwondo has remained open since 1991, and we’ve had more than (number here) students train with us over the years, (Number here) of them gaining Black Belt Certification.

The TAGB provide full indemnity insurance as a group meaning we have adequate coverage while you training, should you accidentally injure yourself and it impacts your work or life.

I'm a tall / short / big / small / lanky / muscular person, is Taekwondo for me?

Your physique doesn’t matter as much as you may think it does. Martial Arts are great for all body types and people of all walks of life. Whilst certain Martial Arts do favour a certain body type, think of Taekwondo as the perfect all rounder.

Aside from the physical health attributes like improved flexibility and reflexes, Taekwondo is also known for the mental health benefits, increased confidence, improved self-esteem, focus, concentration levels and self-discipline. These benefits are gained by anyone and everyone who regularly trains under the supervision of TAGB Taekwondo instructors.

Should I gain more muscle / weight before I get into Taekwondo?

You don’t need to gain or lose weight to start training with us. As a beginner we’ll guide you to achieve your goals with varied classes covering a range of attributes including fitness, patience, timing, power, balance, flexibility, respect and posture.

We’ve trained hundreds of students since we opened our doors way back in 1991. All of them come from different backgrounds and have different body shapes, but they shared the same end result, after training with us through to Black Belt grade they became experienced Martial Artists and when needed their defence and attack techniques have served them well.

Will Taekwondo help me lose weight?

Yes Taekwondo can help you lose weight as it’s a highly cardiovascular exercise. All the movement, training drills and sparring will lead to active calorie burning. A study by the Mayo Clinic in the US has the average hour of Taekwondo burning 752 calories for a person weighing 72.5kg. As long as your diet is reasonably healthy you will lose weight if you burn more calories than you consume.

Am I too old for Taekwondo?

We’ve heard this question from many adults over the last 3 decades we’ve been open. Many adults may talk themselves out of starting Taekwondo simply because they think they’re too old to take part.

We’re of the opinion you’re never too old to start gaining the benefits of a Martial Art. Yes, it’s harder for older students but if you’re dedicated and regularly train you will start to see huge benefits in flexibility, muscle tone and combat intelligence.

What equipment do I need to start Taekwondo?

To join in your first class, which you can do for FREE if you register here, you’ll just need to turn up wearing loose fitting clothing (for example jogging bottoms and T-shirt) and bring a water bottle for refreshment.

As you progress there are various pieces of clothing and equipment you’ll need, but we’ll build up to that in time and never expect you to buy it all at once or within your first few training sessions. We like students to be settled and ready for the next steps before you make any financial commitment like a Taekwondo dobok or protective equipment.

I don't have a friend to come with, can I come on my own?

70% of students come alone, and we run a friendly, family-run club. Many students have made lifelong friends and associates which they’ve known for years, and they wouldn’t have met without sharing a passion for Martial Arts. Whether you’re outgoing or reserved, we’ll help you settle in and enjoy every session making the most of your time and achieving the results you set out to achieve with Taekwondo.

What does Taekwondo training involve?

Taekwondo training consists of exercising all the muscles of the body via practicing basic & advanced techniques, patterns and sparring. To aid the development of the body, muscle building and stretching exercises such as press ups, sit ups etc. are used.

Training is designed to challenge each individual. You will work to your own ability and develop yourself. It does not matter whether someone else is quicker or slower at learning, or is more or less fit than you, anyone can gain great benefits from Taekwondo.

Is it easy to gain a Black Belt?

The minimum training time to achieve a black belt is 3 and a half years. Some, shall we say less professional organisations advertise that you can gain a black belt within a year, or even less, but the problem with this is you’ll lack the experience and skill it takes to be a black belt. Many of these clubs are run by stand-alone instructors with no accreditation to a professional organisation, they are just looking for students to generate profit, and generally these clubs have a high turnover or poor students who sadly become disillusioned with Martial Arts.

With the TAGB you can be assured that you are getting quality tuition, from certified experienced instructors with regular gradings held with a professional atmosphere where the students are assessed to be promoted to their next grade. Black Belt gradings are held only at the TAGB headquarters twice yearly and are a valuable experience to every student who has taken part. For sure you won’t just be handed your Black Belt, you will need to demonstrate the ability, precision and mindset required to be a TAGB Taekwondo Black Belt.

How do I progress through the Taekwondo ranks?

We have  a high standard at Evesham School of Taekwondo, the instructors will put a student forward for a grading only when you are ready and have reached the required standard. Every student has the ability to reach black belt and beyond, but we strive to get the best out of each student and help them get the most from their training.

Like many Martial Arts Taekwondo has ranks which we call ‘Kup’. New student begin at 10th Cup or White Belt, and advance down to 1st Cup. As the student advances into an intermediate, they will advance towards being a Black Belt candidate. At this point the student takes a dan test, if successful at which point the student becomes a 1st dan black belt.

At Black belt rank our students have become professional Martial Artists, certified by the TAGB. At this stage we can teach more deadly and dangerous techniques which are avoided by beginners and intermediates for obvious reasons.
